The Gold Trap

The Eight Sentences:

In the darkness of her bedroom, Miriam Gold felt a hand over her mouth and then heard a whisper in her ear, “Crawl into the bathroom and call 9-1-1.”
It was a pre-arranged course of action she and Ron had planned years ago and had never had to use it — until now.
A digital clock showed 2:30 A.M. and the house was pitch black dark — you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face. Ron had always felt darker was safer.
Ron rolled back away from Miriam as she began to slip out of the bed onto the floor. While he still lay on his back, he reached down and felt his .45 caliber pistol in its holster attached to the side of the bed, a bullet already chambered.      It felt as comfortable in his hand now as it had for over thirty years. His thumb found the safety with ease and flicked it down — he was ready to shoot.
Ron Gold's .45

The Back Story:
Ron Gold is a member of The Presidents Club. In this scene, he and his wife,Miriam respond to the unwelcomed visit of an intruder.
Ron is retired from the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of a special forces group (similar to the Navy's SEALS).
From the book: "The Golds had celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary two years before, when Ron was eighty. They were both in good health despite their genes — remarkable for their age. They both had high blood pressure and Ron had battled diabetes for years. With the exception of Ron’s obsession with television documentaries, they enjoyed good mental health as well."

Six Sentence Sunday - 12-23-12

Please TAKE NOTE!
For the last few weeks, my contributions to SSS have been from my new novel, The Presidents Club.
Today, we show off the cover. Did you see it above?
Comments appreciated.
We're pleased that Jeff Bennington did such a great job.
The Presidents Club will begin as a weekly serial on the publisher's web site, HERE.
The action begins on Sunday, January 6, 2013. We hope you'll join us there then. [Eventually, The Presidents Club will be available as an e-book and a trade paperback.]

This week's SET UP:

John Hixon, the former FBI agent that readers first met in
The Tourist Killer, lives in a small cabin in the mountains of Western North Carolina.
The cabin is in an area known locally as "Little Canada."  It's one place you DON'T want to hear banjos playing.
In this snippet, we are introduced to one of his three dogs.

The Six Sentences

They were big, fast, and mean, but they loved John Hixon.
No one would ever sneak up on him as long as these three guys were around.
He enjoyed talking about his “gang” to the rare visitor that he might bring to his mountain redoubt. “‘Uzi’ was my first one, he’s a German pitweiller.
I got him from a shelter in South Carolina about two days before they would have euthanized him.”
Hixon would smile and then add, “He’s always been grateful.”

10-21 Six Sentence Sunday

Julian Thibaut, an enigmatic billionaire, is described (in part) by this snippet from my soon to be released novel, The Tourist Killer.

Baltimore, MD was north enough for Julian Thibaut.
He had long since separated himself from many of the divisive attitudes and cultural incongruences of the Deep South, but he could not forsake his family heritage and locate his corporate offices north of the Mason-Dixon Line. He disdained most of what he knew about everything inside the beltway. Thibaut did not talk slow. He did, however, take the time to caress each word. It was because of this habit that New Yorkers would say he had a Southern drawl.

10-14 Six Sentence Sunday

The Setup:
In this scene from The Tourist Killer, a visiting Yank has a private meeting with his boss's personal assistant at his apartment in London.
I call it a "Prelude to a Kiss."

She put her drink on the table between them with a slow deliberate motion, all the while maintaining eye contact. The steel blue eyes from the afternoon’s meeting somehow seemed a bit softer now. Griffin Challenger was about to experience a secret that every other member of the management team had previously enjoyed. A dangerous secret that they all knew could end their careers, and possibly their lives as well — if they broke silence. With a simultaneous motion, she slipped off her heels and with both hands reached up behind her head to undo the bun. Her hair fell well past her shoulders with a shake of her head.
