Just who are those guys in the Presidents Club?

The Eight Sentences:
“We got no secrets,” commented Reverend Pritchett.
Pointe continued, “The facts I’ve discovered may not be secrets in this room, but I suspect that they aren’t commonly known in your community. I’ll give you a few examples.
Three of the eight men, I’m including Louie, whose real name I know, have concealed carry permits. Five of you have had run-ins with the IRS and one is still paying them off. You all know each other’s marital and employment status. I know your military histories and which of you have been checked out by the FBI.
I also know that the most dangerous man in the room, except for myself and Louie, who has a sawed off shotgun behind the bar, is not the youngest member of your group.”

The Back Story:
Gerald Pointe is in charge of security for billionaire Julian Thibaut who is about to visit the Louisville Tavern in a few days. In the snippet above, he shares with the regulars of the tavern(aka the "Presidents Club"), a portion of what he's learned about them.

News items:
       1. My first novel, The Tourist Killer, is now available on Barnes & Noble so you can read it with your NOOK.
      2. Starting Saturday, May 4, The Presidents Club increases in frequency. Three chapters a week will be presented on Sat, Sun, & Wed.

April 7, 2013 - Conspiracy Defined

The Set Up:
John Hixon, a character common to my first two novels, The Tourist Killer, and The Presidents Club is a former FBI agent.
He is also a devil's advocate -- at least when it comes to conspiracy theories.
In this week's snippet, the gang of retirees at The Louisville Tavern are discussing that very topic. Let's join them.

The Snippet:

“What’s the difference in a ‘plot’ and a ‘conspiracy’?” asked Woody Risk after a long sip of draft beer.
“They’re the same thing,” York replied, always so sure of himself.

Ron Gold began his reply with a deep, hearty belly laugh, then commented, “A conspiracy is when you get caught!”
The others laughed with him, then York countered with, “Was Bill Clinton’s fling with Monica a conspiracy? He got caught.”
Risk looked at Ulysses Fishinghawk, “You’re our resident linguist, Dr. Fishinghawk. What’s the answer?”
“One person can have a plot. A conspiracy needs more than one person involved.”
York burst out, “See! I was right! The ‘Monica Lewinsky Affair’ was a right-wing conspiracy to impeach the President.”
Risk said, “I thought a conspiracy by definition involved doing something bad.”

Easter weekend sample

The Set Up

This week, we return to my serial novel, The Presidents Club.  We join a scene from Chapter 18 back in the Louisville Tavern. The guys are discussing an absent member while Louie the bartender has just finished serving a new custome -- a stranger.

The Snippet

Tommy Pritchett was proud of his friend, Abe, “Where is he?”
Louie answered, “He called a couple of hours ago. He was going to stop by and pick up Ron after he got off work at the Holiday Inn. Ron needed a ride today.”
“Ron needs a ride every day,” muttered York.
Fishinghawk took up for Ron, “Sometimes he don’t -- sometimes he walks.”
“Ain’t he in his eighties?” asked the pastor.
“Where is he?” asked Dr. Ridge.
“Can’t you hear? They just said Abe’s bringing him,” York snapped.
“Of course, I can hear!” retorted Ridge. “I’m talking about the new guy, Gregg, or whatever he said his name is.”
They looked at the bar stool where Jerry Gregg had been -- and he was gone.

Weekend Writing Warriors - Feb. 10, 2013

The Set Up
Today's excerpt comes from Chapter Six of my serial novel, The Presidents Club. In Chapter Four, one of the characters, Ronald Gold, watched a documentary on public television, More Than One Vote. Although the documentary is fictitious, a dear friend of mine from New York wrote a review of it for me [link above on title].
We join Mr. Gold and one of his friends as they discuss the documentary...

The Six Sentences
"It seemed like they wanted to educate kids about how the government is supposed to work as opposed to how it is working.”
“Yeah, like that’s going to change anytime soon,” Abe laughed.
“I’m telling you, man. This was impressive. I haven’t heard anything so sincere since the Temptations sang, ‘My Girl’ on Ed Sullivan,” and Gold smiled.
They could hear the dominoes being shuffled again,so Abe spun around on his bar stool to face the gamesmen and asked, “How many of y’all vote?”
His answer was four stares as blank as the domino with no spots.
After a pause, York spoke up, “You mean in elections?”
